Thomas was the son of a French nobleman and a Black slave, Marie Cessette-Dumas. At the time, this was a colony of France, notable for sugar production and human rights violations on an epic scale. Thomas-Alexandre was born in Saint-Domingue (which later became Haiti) in 1762.
