6/29/2023 0 Comments Mario testino ciao“I have always taken the same approach with my pictures. “The way Dove empowers women to celebrate their own unique beauty has long resonated with me,” Testino explains. To mark the 60th anniversary of its #RealBeauty campaign, Dove collaborated with renowned photographer and creative director Mario Testino to capture 30 portraits of real, beautiful women from around the world. The beauty giant uses women of all shapes, colors, and sizes instead of models in its campaigns, never digitally distorts bodies, and is aiming to educate more than 20 million women around the world on body confidence and self-esteem by 2020 thanks to its Dove Real Beauty Pledge. Since 1957, Dove has celebrated real women. In a world of Instagram filters, photo-editing apps, and photoshopped magazine covers where plastic surgery has become the norm, it’s easy to lose track of what real beauty is all about, which is why Dove is making it its mission to remind us.

6/29/2023 0 Comments A love like ours by becky wadeIt’s certainly an area that chimes very strongly with my own reading interests, especially women writers from the mid-20 th century. Naturally, trailblazing publishers such as Virago Press and Persephone Books have been championing this area for several years but other, more recent imprints are also contributing to the renaissance, enhancing the current demand for these fascinating rediscoveries. In many ways, that review reminded me of just how much interest there is in these rediscoveries from the past at the moment. First published in 1957, this haunting, dreamlike novella was recently reissued by Pushkin Press in a beautiful new edition for a whole new generation of readers to enjoy. A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about A Silence Shared, a lovely rediscovered classic by the Italian writer and artist Lalla Romano (tr. 6/29/2023 0 Comments Gale christiansonYou can discover the latest offers on Gale E Christianson products and save money each time you decide to purchase. Somehow, we were always warm, clean, well fed and happy. I don't know how my mother managed, really, because both she and Dad taught full time, but she came home and cooked on a wood stove and did all the laundry by hand, boiling the clothes and sheets in a big copper kettle. The horse period was a time when my parents entered a "let's-be-self-sufficient" phase, so we had a horse, but no electricity and all our water came from the rain tank.Īs well as the horse and dogs, we had 2 cows (Buttercup and Daisy and one of them always had a calf), a sheep (Woolly,) goats (Billy and Nanny) dozens of ducks, chooks, and a couple of geese, a pet bluetongue lizard and a huge vegie patch. In case you imagine we were a filthy rich horse-owning family, let me assure you we weren't. I have to say, dogs and horses are great audiences, apart from their tendency to drool occasionally. Family legend has it that I used to spend hours playing in the sand pit, with a dog on either side of me and Rocka the horse leaning over me, his head just touching my shoulder, while I told them stories. 6/29/2023 0 Comments The black count reviewHe married a white woman and they spent most of their time apart, but shared deeply affectionate letters. Thomas took his mother’s last name (Dumas), and joined the French military where he became a famous general, lauded for his triumphs in the Alps. Then his father remarried and reduced Thomas’ funds. Thomas went to France with his father and for a time he was spoiled rotten and got a great education and achieved some fame for his athleticism, horsemanship, and swordsmanship. Then the father bought Thomas back, but he left Thomas’ siblings and mother in slavery. When Thomas was a teenager his father sold him, his mother, and his siblings so that he (the father) could raise money to reclaim his estate and move to France. Thomas was the son of a French nobleman and a Black slave, Marie Cessette-Dumas. At the time, this was a colony of France, notable for sugar production and human rights violations on an epic scale. Thomas-Alexandre was born in Saint-Domingue (which later became Haiti) in 1762. Here’s a bare bones description of the life of Thomas-Alexandre Dumas: It tells the story of Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, the father of Alexandre Dumas. History buffs, you won’t want to miss reading this book. The Black Count: Glory, Revolution, Betrayal, and the Real Count of Monte Cristo is a biography that is packed with adventure and drama and a smidgen of romance. 6/28/2023 0 Comments Longitude by Dava SobelIn 1998, The Illustrated Longitude was published, supplementing the earlier text with 180 images of characters, events, instruments, maps and publications.ĭetermining longitude on land was fairly easy compared to the task at sea. The book was made into a television series entitled Longitude. Longitude: The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time is a best-selling book by Dava Sobel about John Harrison, an 18th-century clockmaker who created the first clock ( chronometer) sufficiently accurate to be used to determine longitude at sea-an important development in navigation. 6/28/2023 0 Comments My beautiful oopsOr just read Beautiful Oops! in your classroom or library, and celebrate the idea of turning accidents into teaching moments. Indeed, have you ever woken from a dream and thought, “but my God, that seemed so real”? Have you ever hallucinated your socks off? Have you ever sworn to have witnessed something when someone else swears to have witnessed something else? The fact we dream and hallucinate means, for Descartes, our senses aren’t always trustworthy. With this strict criteria for truth in mind, it’s not long before - as depicted with masterful drama in his Meditations on First Philosophy - Descartes struggles to feel convinced by the existence or reliability of, well, anything. He thus decided that if there was reason to doubt the truth of something - no matter how slim the doubt - then it should be discarded as false. It’s a cool 1640 night in Leiden, Netherlands, and French philosopher René Descartes picks up his pen… “I am here quite alone,” he writes, “and at last I will devote myself sincerely and without reservation to the general demolition of my opinions.”īut Descartes was not without reason: in his work as a mathematician, he worried that if the foundations of knowledge were not completely solid, anything built upon them would inevitably collapse. |
