He enriches his poems with many references and images of nature as mirroring human life problems and issues, and following a pattern of birth, development, maturity and decay. First there are the four seasons and Zhivago’s belief that life in general follows, as fundamental nature, the pattern of the seasons. The bulk of the poems have two features which are close to Zhivago. The notion of writing poems in a voice not one’s own and doing so convincingly is a noteworthy achievement to me. In my college days I fancied myself a poet and struggled over the handful of poems I wrote, seeking my voice and editing constantly. What was pretty amazing to me is that Pasternak could not only write the appealing poems, but so within the character of Zhivago. There are lots of scenes I recall, including that Zhivago wrote poetry, but I didn’t have any memory that poems themselves had appeared in the novel. I read the novel many years ago, and have seen the film made from the novel several times. The poems are accompanied by dark but haunting drawings by Bill Greer. Pasternak worked with this project, choosing the order of poems and allowing for some editing. This is a lovely little book which is excerpted from the novel DOCTOR ZHIVAGO. I appreciate the knowledge gained on various ingredients, and the ideas for continuing to cook wholesome food without waste. Actually, most of the ways to make them were the same, just switching out veggies. I love fermented vegetables and there were many simple ways to make them in this. I am very tempted to buy a copy for that alone. Fermentation and enzymes are what our bodies are missing (removed from our diets by over-processed food), along with whole odd grains (because white flour turns into sugar in the bloodstream quickly), many varieties of vegetables, meats and so forth.I have a hard time buying into all of it, or perhaps I should say that they overstated their case to the point that it sounded like hyperbole? However, the recipes are solid and tasty sounding. They believe that fat is not evil, but sugar is. The authors give very detailed accounts of ingredients and nutrition. This book sets out to upset the traditional recommendations for food and nutrition giving examples from tribal peoples and other studies. 6/24/2023 0 Comments The locked room austerDoubling and mirroring, the writer's overlapping lives increase his isolation and unknowability even to himself and thicken the intrigue. Fanshawe, expecting to die soon, sends these mournful words: ""Writing was an illness that plagued me for a long time, but now I have recovered from it.'' The narrator's obsession with his task grows stealthily upon him: he retraces Fanshawe's development, hoping to ferret out the mystery of his identity and genius, only to find that each man exists within the other (``he was inside me day and night''). He is to oversee the publication of Fanshawe's waywardly brilliant works, marry his deserted wife and reconstruct Fanshawe's life in order to write his biography. The narrator here gets a summons from Sophie, the wife of his boyhood friend Fanshawe, who has vanished mysteriously, and then from Fanshawe himself. In this final volume of his haunting New York Trilogy (City of Glass and Ghosts each representing different aspects of the same story), poet and novelist Auster deepens his exploration of the writer's mind. 6/23/2023 0 Comments The man who laughs novel
